The newest Blackberry curve, the 8900, exclaims the word; “Class!”. It is rounded and formed, true to other Blackberry models. Take a look at its finer points here in this short review of its features.

The 8900 has a good feel in the hands and a keyboard that responds well to inputs. It is just 109 millimeters ( 4.3 inches ) tall. It weighs a very light 110 grams ( 3.8 ounces ). It looks handsome and resembles the earlier 8300 model, but with a more modern exterior. It is a bit thinner than the 8300 also. It feels solid and exemplifies the goal of Blackberry to form their phones after river rocks.

The screen is comparable to other Blackberry models and is 2.4 inches in size if you measure diagonally. In this small space is packed 65,000 colors. That, combined with the 480 by 360 pixels makes the screen a nice piece of art. You navigate the screen by using the familiar trackball under it. Back and menu buttons are at the sides of the trackball. Overall, the screen has excellent quality and reflects good craftsmanship. It beats its competition when viewing the 8900 in direct sunlight.

The manual keyboard is no surprise for the 8900. It is laid out in the familiar four rows that bend upward. It is a full QWERTY and is easy to type on. It has a softer feel than earlier models. The keyboard can select calling contacts by selecting a few things from the homescreen on the 8900. Select the contact with the trackball and a call is now being made. It is simple and fast.

The web browser is improved on the Blackberry 8900. The trackball again makes it easy to get around on a page and uses a virtual mouse to make it happen. Zooming is adjustable by the user. Moving around on a page is as simple as moving the cursor to the side of the page you are looking at.

The little Blackberry comes with a 512 megahertz processor and 256 megabytes of ROM. It is equipped for more external memory with a MicroSD slot. You can add up to sixteen gigabytes of more information and the card can be hot-swapped. That means it can be changed without turning off the phone. It is sufficient size for thousands of phones.

The camera is 3.15 megapixels in capability for this Blackberry. It comes with an image stabilzer, autofocus, LED flash and geotagging. The photos are taken with minimal quality, in contrast to the other fine points about this phone. Video is included, but is also not a high point of the 8900.

The operating system is the proprietary WebOs from Blackberry and has things like the “Blackberry App World”. It also comes loaded with no less than five games. Texas Holdém, Klondike and Sudoku are included with the 8900. The organizer on this smartphone is one of the best on the market. There is a stopwatch, timer and alarm included. Even though the 8900 does not take good video, it can play them fairly well. DivX and XviD are both included. A music player rounds out the audio section with a 3.5 millimeter connection for headphones.

The 8900 connects with quad band GSM for world-wide use. It also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth using which you can download free ringtones, wallpapers, games, themes, softwares/applications etc. Instead of the usual mini USB cable this Blackberry has the newer and more popular MicroUSB connector.

The Blackberry 8900 comes in black and silver models. Call quality is very good and the battery is a larger 1400 mAh size. This allows for five and a half hours of talking. It is marketed with stiff competition, but for those who know the quality of Blackberry, there is just one choice.

Creating a new ringtone is easy, you simply open up GarageBand and then follow theses simple steps:

Select ‘Create New Music Project’, and in the new dialogue box that opens up type the name you wish the ringtone to be saved under in your iTunes/iPhone.

Open up your iTunes music library and then drag the music file you want to turn into a ringtone, and drop it into the main GarageBand window. This will only work on unprotected AAC/MP3 music files (those downloaded from your own CD collection), so if you have purchased a track in the iTunes store you will not be able to drag and drop it into Garageband, as these are usually classed as protected files.

If the song is very long you may need to shorten it before you can use it in Garageband, as if it takes longer to download than 40 seconds it will automatically time out. You will get a dialogue box telling you if the song needs to be shortened, and you can just click on the ‘Adjust’ button to do this (in blue). A little yellow bar when then appear at the top of the screen and you can shorten the track by as much as you like by clicking on the end of the bar and dragging it to the left. You can preview the new track length by clicking on the play button before moving on, to make sure you are happy with the changes.

Once you have made any adjustments you need to with the track length you can then import the newly created ringtone to iTunes by going to the top of the screen and selecting the ‘Share’ tab, and then ‘Send Ringtone to iTunes’. This will take a few moments to transport, and then go in and check the tag as it can sometimes transported incorrectly so you may need to rename it.

Plug in your iPhone and sync so that it picks up the new imported ringtone and then you will be able to see it under the ‘Settings>Sounds’ menu in your iPhone, so that you can select it as your new ringtone. These ring tones will play on a loop until you have answered your phone as a default setting.
